Wow! 5 months since my last post. My apologies. It has been a wild ride. Unfortunately I can't spend too much time on this post before getting back to work but I know a lot of you are wondering what I've been up to. So, I will very briefly catch you up with what my life has been like this year so far.
I finished up classes in May and have been putting all my time and effort into research since then. I've actually become more busy without classes, but I'm glad they are over. My first seminar was in April and it went pretty well for my first one. I'd like to improve on answering questions from the audience, but that will come with time. I've been working many, many hours collecting data, reading literature, and helping write manuscripts and grants. Even when I'm not in lab, you can usually find me working on my computer at home. It does get stressful, but I know it will all be worth it in the end. I have my first committee meeting next week, which I am both anxious about and looking forward to. After that, I will be doing a lot of writing and continuing to work on my project. I am hoping to take my qualifying exams early next year.
In April, Chris, Ellie, and I were able to travel back to the Midwest to help our friends celebrate two weddings and see our families. The visit at each destination was short, but was totally worth the 40+ hours we (mostly Chris) drove that week. It was wonderful to be a part of our friends' special days and to visit our loved ones. We have also had quite a few visitors over the past few months, and it was great to host some of our closest friends and family members. I also made a last minute trip up north for the 4th of July, which is always a good time.
In June, I attended my first research conference as a graduate student in Denver. Although I was not able to present my research, I plan on presenting at conferences in the future. I learned so much and got to check out a new city (I'd only driven through it before); it was a very successful trip.
We've had Ellie for 6 months now, and I still can't believe she's mine forever. She has brought so much joy to my life and I'm so glad we adopted her. She is quite a character. She still can be quite stubborn, but I wouldn't have it any other way. She is a beagle, after all.
As you can imagine, it has been difficult for me to keep up with things outside of work, but I'm doing the best I can to maintain some balance. I try to fit in exercise whenever I can and have really been focusing on eating right. I finally hit my goal weight this week and have officially lost 20 lbs since I started my weight loss journey last August. I would like to continue working on my strength and endurance.
I am so thankful for the people in my life. It is very difficult for me to not have time to keep in touch or continue to build relationships like I want to, but I am lucky to have the most caring, supportive, and understanding family and friends to have my back during this journey. I cannot thank you enough. Know that you are appreciated.
That is really all I have time for. I will try my best not to let so much time pass before my next post! As always, thanks for reading. God bless.

Well Hello, 2015
Where does the time go?
I'll just dive right in. I finished up last semester well with some successful presentations and all A's! Even more exciting, this is my last semester of classes! When I complete my current courses, I will be able to focus full time on my research. I had a wonderful break between semesters. My parents and sister visited me and we had a wonderful time. Although short, I was very grateful to have the break.
I have made some pretty big changes since my last post. A huge thing for me was that I bought a new (used) car! It is the first big purchase I have made on my own, and I absolutely love it. The peace of mind that comes with driving a car that I don't have to worry about breaking down on me at any minute has greatly decreased my stress. With so many things going on in my life, it was a much needed change!
Another exciting part of my life began on December 29th when Chris and I added a new member to our family! We rescued our 4-year-old beagle, Ellie from the shelter. She was already house/crate trained when we got her, and she is very smart. She has learned so many things already. We are working to take care of her allergies, but other than that she is settling in quite nicely. She does have a stubborn side, but she's so adorable it is impossible to get mad at her. She loves being outside, smelling everything, and chasing anything that moves. She also loves car rides! She is very food-motivated and likes to get into things she isn't supposed to. She doesn't bark often, but her typical beagle bark comes out when there is a stranger at the door or she sees another dog. When we aren't playing outside or with her toys, she likes to sleep. As a matter of fact, she is snoring next to me right now. I'm so happy we adopted her and still can't believe I get to keep her!
Classes so far this semester have been going well. I am taking a course on Non-coding RNAs and a Grant Writing class. I will also have to give my first seminar in April. Wish me luck! Lab has been busy as usual. I am slowly but surely beginning to make some progress. I've had some late nights, but I know it will all be worth it.
I may have gotten a bit off track for a while with my health goals, but I have recently gotten back on track and was able to maintain my weight throughout the holidays. I have lost 13 pounds since I began taking my health seriously in August. I seemed to hit a plateau after correcting my eating and trying to fit exercise in when I could, so I re-evaluated my goals. I realized that I really want to get stronger and that I'm going to have to kick up my exercise a level to continue to lose weight and tone up. I have started to attend fitness classes at the gym, and Ellie and I have been going on runs together. I'm really looking forward to the progress I'm going to be making over the next few months.
My last bible study was absolutely amazing. The Best Yes by Lysa Terkeurst is a wonderful book and I would highly recommend it. Our current study started this week-we are reading Keep it Shut by Karen Ehman, a study in which we focus on using our words for good and "taming our tongues". As always, I'm looking forward to growing with such a wonderful group of ladies.
I think that's all I have for now. Looking forward to what the future holds! God is good! Thanks for reading and for your continued support on this journey through life!

Mid-Autumn Lowdown
Well, I'm a little over halfway through the semester and my life has been pretty crazy.
Class is going well but keeps me busy. I have some important assignments/presentations due in the coming weeks, so I am a little stressed about them but am trying to work ahead to alleviate any last minute anxiety. I have definitely been learning a lot and am really expanding the knowledge I have for my field.
Working in the lab has been going well. I recently met with my mentor to discuss ideas for my thesis project and am really excited for it and for the direction of our lab. I am currently working on some preliminary experiments to shape the direction of my project, as well as helping contribute to the already existing projects in our lab.
My weekends have been much busier than I am used to as well - we have had a lot of different events to attend. We went to Disney and became Annual Passholders. It was a blast as usual. I made a last minute trip to the Midwest to visit Chris's parents, attend Homecoming/Alumni weekend, and to visit my parents and sister. We also were able to attend my good friends' wedding, which was really beautiful. Needless to say, I haven't had too much time to relax and have had to work hard to catch up and get reorganized.
With all of the traveling and activities, it has been very difficult to keep up with eating right and exercising, but I am not becoming discouraged. I have lost 10 lbs since the beginning of August, and that keeps me motivated to keep going. Plus, I still have the Ride to Defeat ALS coming up! Chris has joined my team, so we will be riding 25 miles together on November 8 to raise money for this great cause. I would like to again thank all who have donated. I still need $50 to participate and Chris needs $80, so any additional support would be greatly appreciated! Our team website is http://web.alsa.org/site/TR/Rides/Florida?team_id=310443&pg=team&fr_id=10501. There is also an option to donate by check if you do not feel comfortable making payments online. Please follow the directions on the website or contact me directly if you need assistance. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Our current bible study is fantastic. We are reading The Best Yes by Lysa Terkeurst and it has been amazing so far. We are exploring how to make the best decisions in our lives. Very eye-opening and very relevant.
Besides a couple more busy weekends with Halloween parties and such, I will be kicking it into high gear for work and class until I get to take a break for Christmas. Knowing that I will get to spend time with my family gives me the motivation to work extra hard to accomplish my goals. Also, good news - my sister's flight is booked and she'll get to visit me too! I'm already looking forward to it.
That's all I have for this update. I'll leave you with my current mantra, "You are confined only by the walls you build yourself."
Thanks so much for your support! God bless.

1st Year Complete
It is hard to believe I have already accomplished an entire year of graduate school. It has definitely been a roller coaster ride, but I have grown so much in the last year. My fall courses have started and so far they are great. One class is a very in-depth discussion-based course on various topics within the cardiovascular field and the other is a prep course for my qualifying exams (which I hope to take next year). I have been working very hard in the lab (with some very long days) but I am really excited to take off with experiments and development of my project. Things are really starting to come together in my brain, and that is a great feeling.
In my last post, I mentioned I was trying to get back to a healthier version of me. Well I really committed and must say that I am pleased with my progress so far. I have been keeping track of everything I eat in the MyFitnessPal app (http://www.myfitnesspal.com/) and it has really helped me stay focused and be intentional about what I eat. It is a really great app and I highly recommend it. It has a very large database of food and a bar code scanner that will just load the nutritional information into the app for you. It allows you to pick your own goals and keep track of not only what you eat, but also your weight and exercise. Although it is sometimes very difficult to get exercise in due to work, I don't let missing a day (or two or five) bring me down. I don't look at it as starting over - life happens and that is okay. I just fit in exercise when I can. Some weeks I can work out every day, and some maybe just one day. I've already lost 7lbs, which is really encouraging. I am beginning to feel much stronger physically and mentally. I have also signed up to participate in the 2014 Ride to Defeat ALS in Tampa on November 8th. It is a 25 mile bike ride and I need to raise at least $250 to participate. I am over halfway there so far, but still need to raise a bit more. If you would like to support me, you can go to my personal fundraising page at http://web.alsa.org/goto/jmeeg. Thank you so much for those who have already shown their support!
The summer bible study I was co-leading went pretty well. I am really excited to start our new study next week. I am so grateful for the time I have been able to share with the ladies in our group and am looking forward to our continued growth, getting closer to each other and to God. I have never met such an encouraging, motivating, and strong group of women, and am so blessed to be a part of it.
Other than my every day life, some exciting things are coming up. Chris and I are hosting a very good friend of ours next week and then we get to join our other close friends at Disney next weekend! Also, my parents have booked their flights to visit for Christmas and I couldn't be more excited. Fingers crossed my sister gets to join them! Chris's parents will also be visiting around the same time. I absolutely cannot wait. It is going to be such an amazing time. I have a lot to get done before then, though. Please pray for me to stay focused and motivated!
Well I need to wrap it up so I can get ready for work (yes-on a Saturday). As always, thanks to all my life supporters. I clearly have the best family and friends.
I'll end this one with my latest motto quoted from William Shakespeare: "Though she be but little, she is fierce."

Short Mid-Summer Update
It has been really nice not having to worry about classes this summer. I've been able to relax and refresh, spend time with family and friends, and work on getting healthier. I have been working in the lab full time, learning techniques and reading a lot of scientific publications and background information. I'm slowly beginning to formulate ideas for a potential project with my mentor. It is getting pretty exciting to be able to move forward, but I still have a ton of work to do. I traveled up north to see my family recently and to attend my grandfather's memorial service. The service and being able to see everyone was really nice. I have been eating healthier and exercising regularly, and am starting to feel much better. My young women's group has been going really well-it has been great spending time with other ladies of faith and "doing life" together. This may be the shortest post I've ever written. I guess that's what summer is all about.

When There is No Peril in the Fight, There is No Glory in the Triumph
The quote that I have chosen to title this post is said to have come from Pierre Corneille, a French dramatist in the 1600s. It fits perfectly with the idea that when we struggle to obtain what we want to achieve, it feels like such a bigger victory because of what we have gone through to get there. With that said, I am pleased to share that I have survived my first year of graduate school (academically, anyway). I took my last exams this past week and will now be focusing on research full-time. I will be using this summer to learn and develop an expertise for laboratory techniques, as well as grow as a scientific thinker. I also hope to begin progress toward ideas for a potential thesis project. Although taking a summer off would be wonderful, I am really excited to plunge into research, and I will really enjoy not having to use all of my free time to study!
Chris and I have an exciting month ahead of us. Between going to Disney and having a number of visitors, we are going to be quite busy. It is going to be pretty hectic, but we love being able to see our family and friends. I will also be co-leading the study for our young women's group and couldn't be more thrilled. I am really excited to get back to meeting with these ladies every week. We really lift each other up. I'm also looking forward to getting back to working out. An injury and exams threw off my whole schedule and I will feel so much better when I get back to being healthy. I may even read for pleasure this summer...I know-crazy thought.
I know this is a pretty short post, but I'm just so glad to get a break from school! Plus, school pretty much consumed my life for the past few weeks so not much happened. My cousin did get to visit for a weekend so we could celebrate our birthdays and we had a blast. Relay for Life was very successful-thank you for all of the kind donations. It was definitely an event to remember and between the 100 teams that participated, over $60,000 was raised for cancer research and support.
Thank you so much for supporting and believing in me. I cannot express enough how awesome it is to be able to rely on so many people for encouragement and prayers. It means so much to me. Thanks for reading!

Mid-semester Check-in
Things sure have been crazy around here lately. Just finished round two of three of exams. I can see the end! As usual, I have been crazy busy with classes but learning so much. I have been getting some hands-on experience in my lab as well which is really exciting. I can't wait until I'm done with classes and can just focus on my research! I will be discussing potential projects with my boss soon and am really looking forward to experiencing the whole process.
Although school takes up the majority of my time, I have done a lot of fun things in the past couple months.
I joined a young women's life group that meets every week and absolutely love it! We have some amazing discussions and really lift each other up.
I have been actively participating in our student organization including our Relay for Life team. We have been holding fundraisers and the event is only two weeks away! (If you are interested in donating to my personal page please go here: http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=56887&pg=personal&px=35558130. Every dollar goes to cancer research and support! I'll be walking for my grandpa.) I've also been playing on our intramural soccer team and helping plan a lot of fun activities for current and potential colleagues.
I went to Disney! We made an adult trip with our friends from Chicago and had an amazing time! We met a lot of different characters, rode fun rides, and ate way too much food. We're really looking forward to going again in May.
We have also had visitors! We had a few friends from up north visit us for a fun night out and I visited my aunt and cousin in Tarpon Springs last weekend. It was so great catching up.
I've been getting back into running lately (slowly but surely) and ran my first 5k in quite a while last weekend - the Electrodash. It went much better than I expected and I was under my goal for time. I'm planning on running my next race in May.
As I mentioned before, I will be participating in Relay for Life in two weeks, I will be doing some community service this weekend that I am looking forward to, my cousin will be visiting over Easter weekend to celebrate our birthdays (so excited!) and then I'll be finishing up my second semester of graduate school!
Thanks for reading and for all of your support!

Night Never Had The Last Word...
...the dawn is always invincible.
I came across this Hugh B Brown quote and thought it was quite fitting for my life, and most likely yours as well. It is such a powerful, encouraging quote. Never give up. It doesn't matter how difficult your life may be. "This too shall pass." (One of my all time favorites.) I thought I would relay some words of encouragement for you, my readers, and to remind you that you are not alone in your struggles. Also, if you are experiencing a difficult time I would have to suggest listening to Gary Allan's "Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain)". Quite uplifting. And for those who take comfort in scripture:
"Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall." -Psalm 55:7
"Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you." -1 Peter 5:4
(Sidenote: I'm always taking prayer requests-you know how to reach me!)
You may be wondering where all of this is coming from. Well, if you read my last post you know I had a pretty rough last semester. But I survived-and I want others to know they can too. Things will change with patience. They did for me. Let me elaborate...
I will start with Christmas/New Year's. Chris and I received the wonderful blessing of our parents joining us here for the holidays instead of us trying to come up with the money and time to travel home. It was actually the first time we got to spend the holidays together, and having our families with us made it even more special. I was really missing my family and getting to spend time with them gave me a lot of re-motivation.
Those of you who know me know that when I set my mind to something or make a commitment I don't give up. Last semester was so difficult I started to question whether I had made the right decisions about moving and graduate school and everything. Sometimes I guess it is good to be stubborn. At times I felt like the struggle would never end. But it did. And I'm so thankful for my persistence and faith.
I would like to take an aside here and thank all of my supporters. I know I thanked you in my last post, but you will never know how much I appreciate having people like you on my side. I couldn't do it without you!
Back to me. Don't be mistaken. There were many positive things going on in my life during this time. I was learning many new things, becoming a stronger person, and perhaps the best thing that happened was that I relied on my faith more than anything. I feel closer to God now than ever and have learned so much about myself. (Sidenote: Take your opportunities! You won't regret it. Or maybe you will. But you won't have to wonder.)
Anyway, what I have been getting to is that this semester has been a complete 180 so far from last semester. I feel like I can breathe. I'm taking classes that I am really interested in. I am getting more involved in things outside of class. I'm starting to feel like me again. I also have some news. As you know, I rotated through labs last semester in hopes of finding my "home". Well, I found it. I have accepted a position in a lab where I will work on my dissertation and continue the rest of my PhD training. The lab specializes in cardiovascular research. For those of you who are wondering why I went into a lab that doesn't specialize in Alzheimer's disease: long story short, the laboratory you pick (and that picks you) as a PhD student depends on many different factors. The lab I have chosen is the best fit for me. I have not given up my interest in Alzheimer's disease-I plan on becoming an expert in cardiovascular research at this time and hope to one day make a connection between cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.
Besides class (I have a lot this semester) and acclimating to my new lab, I have been keeping myself pretty busy with getting healthy and participating in our graduate student organization. We have a lot of great social, professional, and service events coming up that require a lot of effort on everyone's part to plan and organize. One thing that we are really excited about is our Relay for Life team. Our goal is to raise $1000 for cancer research and support. The event takes place April 12. If you would like to learn more about what Relay for Life is all about, you can go here: http://www.relayforlife.org/learn/whatisrelay/index. If you would like to help us reach our goal and support a great cause you can donate on my fundraising page here: http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=56887&pg=personal&px=35558130. There is an option to mail in a check if you do not feel comfortable submitting your credit/debit card information online. I will be walking for my grandfather, who recently lost his battle.
I'm not one for New Year's resolutions. If a change is needed, why wait? Why not today? However, I am a very goal-oriented person and I hope to continue to become stronger mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. I wish you the best of luck in pursuing your own hopes, dreams, goals, and resolutions. Let's raise each other up. Put up your negativity filter and surround yourself with positive influences. I personally am sick of hearing about everything wrong in the world and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Be a light in the darkness. Keep pushing. You may not be able to control your circumstances, but you can control your attitude. Treat every day like the gift that it is. Arise. Don't let the night have the last word.
As always, thanks so much for reading. Your support is truly appreciated. God bless.

Hi...Remember Me?
The semester is finally over. It was long. It was tough. I'm extremely thankful for this break. The last few months have probably been the most difficult time I've had in my life thus far. Between moving to a new city over 1,000 miles from my family, the stresses of graduate school, losing my dog, and my grandfather's health issues, it has been difficult at times to keep my head up. However, I am lucky to be surrounded with magnificent people, even if they are so many miles away. My amazing family, friends, and church have kept me strong enough to push through. Thanks, everyone. I survived my first semester of graduate school.
Tampa
It is December and the weather is still gorgeous. Enough said.
Graduate School
As you know, I have been taking classes and rotating through laboratories to find the perfect fit. I struggled through my classes, and not having a lab to call home can be quite stressful. It is very difficult to find the right combination of people, environment, research, and funding. I have yet to determine where I will be staying long-term. I have had a lot of great experiences and difficult decisions to make. I have learned many techniques and have improved my critical thinking skills. I am patiently waiting for everything to work out the way it is supposed to.
New Church
I found my church home a few months ago and have enjoyed attending every Sunday. It is a place I feel comfortable with myself, where I can serve others, and where I can be with others who share my beliefs. I will be a part of an arts ministry being created in which I hope to get closer to others and use my talents to serve. There's no doubt that I have truly been blessed in my life, and I have really been working not to lean on my own understanding. My faith has gotten me through so much and I am looking forward to see what is next.
Breaks
I was fortunate enough to go to Disney for my first time, and it was amazing. Even though I only went for two days, it was a great experience. I was able to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner with close family friends and am very grateful to have been able to share the holiday with great people. I also was able to fly up to see my family for the past few days. Even though it was cold and snowy, I always enjoy spending time with the people I love the most.
I believe I have summed up what has been going on in my life without going into too much personal detail. I know it is quite a short post for not writing since September, but the majority of my time (and by that I basically mean all of my time) has been spent in the lab, in class, or studying. I am going to enjoy my time off and get recharged to tackle the next semester. I am really excited for my parents to join me for Christmas, and looking forward to all the fun things I have planned for the next few weeks. Have a very merry, loving, giving, safe, and blessed Christmas!

One Month Down
I've been in graduate school for a month now and the time is flying by. I have been in my lab for three weeks and only have two left before I do my next rotation. I have learned so much so far. It can be a little overwhelming at times but it will all be worth it. I had my first exam last week and although I feel I could have done better I don't think it went too badly. I've been working a lot of hours in my lab and it is extremely time consuming but I couldn't pick better people to work with. Although everyone takes their work very seriously, they are mostly laid back and are extremely helpful. They are also quite fun-we spend a lot of time laughing together. I don't really have much time outside of school, but I have made a lot of great new friends through the program. We get together regularly, which can be a really nice break from the stress that comes with school. My boyfriend has also moved in with me, which is making things much easier. I've pretty much settled into a routine here, but living in a big city is definitely different from what I am used to. There are plenty of things to do, but I also have to be much more careful. I think that pretty much covers what is new with me. Hope all is well with you!
In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.

First Week Recap
I survived my first week of graduate school!
Through a number of meetings and different classes it definitely had some ups and downs. Overall I would say it went well. I have some lab rotations set up that start this week. I am pretty nervous about working in someone's lab that I barely know, but I am really looking forward to how much I will learn. My classes have mostly been review so they haven't been difficult so far. I am trying to stay ahead on all my work to hopefully avoid as much stress as possible.
I plan on being very busy now that lab rotations will be starting. I have a lot to learn, and I will have to prove myself to the members of each lab so that I will be able to secure a place in one of them to become a part of long-term. It is a very stressful process, but I know that wherever I end up is where I am meant to be at the particular time, and I only hope that I can make a positive contribution.
There is a lot of uncertainty in my life right now that I believe is contributing to how much I am starting to miss certain things from my past. I also miss a lot of people of course, and it is difficult being so far away. I can't just drive to see anyone anymore-I have to buy a plane ticket. However, this is where I need to be at this point in my life to get to where I want to be. Sacrifices have been made, but I will be a stronger person in the end.
...For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future...

It's Getting Real
I know I haven't posted all summer, and that is because I took a break from basically everything. My graduation party was great, my vacation in Colorado was awesome, and I have been living in Tampa for a couple of weeks. I absolutely love it here. It is definitely hot and humid, and I'm looking forward to it cooling off a little, but it is definitely worth it to not have to experience another Midwest winter.
Orientation was this week, and it was a lot of information in a short amount of time. It was a little exhausting, but definitely interesting. I have met a lot of fantastic people so far and am looking forward to forming some really great relationships. I am getting really excited to start the program Monday!
I guess this would be a good time to explain the program I am in. I will be getting a PhD in Medical Sciences from the University of South Florida...eventually. The program will most likely take about five years to complete. The first semester is the craziest-I have intensive coursework and laboratory rotations. The rotations are made so I can test out some labs before I pick my mentor. If I pick a lab this semester (and the lab picks me), I can begin working as early as January. If I don't find one to my liking, I have until the end of summer before I absolutely must have a mentor. Once a mutual decision has been made, I will spend the rest of my time in the same place. As far as classwork goes, I should have all of it finished by the end of my second year. When that happens, I will take some really intense exams, and when I pass those, all I have to worry about is working on my own research project. Eventually, I will have to defend, or in other terms, present my project to important people in my field and answer their questions. If they are satisfied with my work, I will get my PhD. That is probably the most basic explanation I can give, especially for people who aren't really in to science. If you are interested in more details, I would be happy to discuss them personally with anyone.
Like I mentioned before, classes start Monday, and I am really excited. I also am in the process of setting up my lab rotations and am really looking forward to working with some great people. I have so much to learn and I am ready to absorb all the new information from my peers and mentors.
Good luck to everyone else starting new programs or returning to school! "...Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." -Joshua 1:9
Although I may be far away, please keep in touch! I'd love to hear how you all are doing! God bless.

I Did It!
I can't believe it has been 2 months since my last post. Time definitely flew by. Anyway...
I am officially a college graduate!
That is really all I can say about that...other than FINALLY!
I was so ready to be home, and it has been amazing. I still have a lot to unpack and organize, but I am just really glad I am finally able to spend time with my family.
Classes finished up really well. I didn't really have any trouble with any exams, and I learned a lot this semester.
My Looking Back, Moving Forward Fundraising Walk to benefit the Alzheimer's Association went great considering it was freezing and hailing during the event. We raised over $800 and I will be sending the money in this week. Thank you so much for everyone who donated, participated, volunteered, or otherwise supported this project. It meant a lot to me to have such a great support group, and I am ecstatic to have raised so much to go toward Alzheimer's research.
I have about three months at home before I move to Tampa, and am really excited about everything. I am really looking forward to the combined graduation party with my sister, who is graduating from high school (so proud!), that we are having at the end of the month. I can't wait to see so many family members that I do not get to see often. I am also judging the state science fair and going to Colorado for two weeks with my dad. The rest of the my time will be spent getting back to being healthy (eating right, exercising, fixing my back, etc), trying to earn a little bit of money, catching up on reading and other hobbies, and relaxing before I hit the craziness of graduate school. Although I am really excited to go on to the next level in my education, I am really looking forward to taking a break from the stress that comes with it.
I don't really have that much else to touch on. I'm just really glad I am finished with my undergraduate career! Congratulations to all of my classmates, and thank you to all that have supported my dreams and goals.
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them. (Romans 8:28)

The Moment You've All Been Waiting For
I feel like every time I write a post, I have to apologize for it being so long since my last update. I know it has been an incredibly long time and a lot of you are probably wondering what is going on in my life. There has actually been a good reason for me not sharing what has been going on. As I was going through all of my graduate school interviews, I did not feel that it was best to share my thoughts, feelings, opinions, etc until my final decision was made. Yes, that means I have made my final decision. Many of you have a pretty good idea of which school I have chosen, but I would like to touch on the process before I reveal it officially. Please know that I will not be sharing everything that I feel and if you want any information on a specific school or how to pick a school in general you can contact me individually.
My first interview was at MUSC. As it was my first, you can imagine how nervous I was. It was also the first time I had to fly by myself, so that added to the anxiousness. I am an advocate for pushing yourself through your fears to eliminate them, so it was a great experience. During my visit to MUSC, I learned a ton about graduate school and what things to look for in a program. It is all about what program fits you. MUSC is a great school with a great graduate program in biomedical science. However, I knew before I left that I would not fit there. There is nothing bad I can say about the program, it just wasn't what I was looking for. Again, if you want more details about specific reasons you can contact me individually.
My second interview was at USF. I have always loved Florida, so I felt pretty comfortable there off the bat, but most of my comfort came from knowing exactly what I should be looking for in a program. The people I met were very friendly and the visit was very informative. I think what I liked most was that everyone was so honest. Another plus to their program is that they have the Byrd Alzheimer's Institute, which I even got to tour. I left Tampa (sadly, because it was in the 70s and I had to go back to single digit temperatures) thinking that USF was somewhere I could really see myself.
My third interview was at GRU. I've never been to Augusta, so I was excited to see what it was all about. It is a pretty small city compared to the others I visited, so I really had to think about what kind of area I want to live in. The program that they have really impressed me, and the people were really great. Again, everyone was so straightforward and honest. I probably learned the most about graduate school in general during this visit, like how to look for places to live, how to pick a mentor, etc. It was a really great experience, and I am really glad I got the opportunity.
When all is said and done, I had to pick the school that was the overall right fit for me. I was looking for a school that is excited about the same research as I am, that has a number of different mentors I can choose from, that is very collaborative between departments, that has faculty that really cares about their students' successes, and is in an area I would enjoy to spend the next five years of my life in. The only school that met all of those requirements was the University of South Florida in Tampa. Therefore, I'll be moving there in August. I am really excited to start the next chapter of my life.
Unfortunately, I still have a lot to do before then...like graduate. Classes have been going well so far, and I really can't complain about the extra time I have had from taking a lighter course load. I have been picking up extra hours at work, however, due to such a busy time at the office. It is a slightly stressful environment but I couldn't pick a better group of people to work with. I have also been working on my honors project fundraising walk to benefit the Alzheimer's Association. We have made great strides in planning the event. If you are interested in registering to walk or making a donation, you can visit the website at http://alzwalk2013.wix.com/lookbackmoveforward.
Well a huge weight has been lifted now that I do not have to worry about what I will be doing after graduation. It is going to be difficult to wait for my next steps, but I am really going to enjoy the time I have left to spend with my family and friends before I move away. Like I mentioned before, if you are interested in graduate school I am always open and willing to offer advice or help talk it out. Thank you for all of your continuing support. It means so much to me.

Finally a Break...Sort of
I survived the semester.
As I expected, the last few weeks of school were extremely stressful, but I pushed through. I didn't do as well in my classes as I am used to, but my grades are about what I expected considering all of the circumstances. I was able to come home last Tuesday evening and relax with the family. I was very productive the next few days with shopping, wrapping gifts, reading, and working out, but I fell ill Saturday and am still trying to recover. I woke up with a fever this morning, but I am hoping to feel better soon.
Although I am now home and I do not have classes to worry about, I am still a bit busy. All of my Christmas shopping is finished, but I still have other things I would like to accomplish. I am continuing to work on my honors project planning and I have a lot of reading to catch up on. I have also been in a great mood for baking, so feel free to stop by my house if you like funfetti cookies or mini apple pies. The great thing about break is that I am not on any type of time schedule. Though I may have things to do, it is up to me when I feel like accomplishing my tasks.
Now that I have updated you on the boring stuff, I have some great news to share with you:
I have been invited to my first graduate school interview at MUSC!
I am very excited and cannot wait to visit the school in January. I will be missing some class, but I expected that to happen. Hopefully I make a good impression on the Admissions Committee and they think I am a good fit for their program.
That's all I have. Merry Christmas! God bless.

I Have a Crazy Life
If you've been following my blog you already knew that I have a crazy life. I actually forgot I even had a blog it has been so busy. I apologize to those who have been anxiously waiting for a new post (*cough*mom*cough*).
I have been spending hours upon hours in the lab working on my research project. I took my last set of data today, so all I need to finish by next week is my poster and paper. What's a few more hours, right?
I have gathered a few volunteers for my honors project, and am in the process of recruiting more. (For those who are new to the blog or don't remember what my project is, I am planning and organizing a fundraising walk for the Alzheimer's Association). I have started to assign some specific tasks to people, and my dream is starting to become a reality. I really hope I can pull this off and raise a good amount of money for the Alzheimer's Association.
Classes are almost over for the semester. Although I am super stressed, it is amazing to think I only have one semester left. I am pretty pumped about it.
All of my graduate school applications are pretty much finished, so now we wait. Hopefully I will be invited to some interviews within the next few months.
Do you know what else I am excited about? Winter break. I can't wait to relax and catch up on my reading (Alzheimer's journal...Pathology book...), and of course Christmas!
However, I hate snow.
I think that is pretty much all of the news I have. I probably won't be able to give another update until after final exams. Hope all is well with everyone! Stay warm and enjoy the season of giving!

I Should Not Be Writing This
I should not be writing this because I have a lot of work to do, but I can't really concentrate anyway and it has been a month since my last post. Therefore, I decided to give everyone a quick update. I obviously have been incredibly busy, but I will be turning in my last lab report tomorrow and my online class ends Friday. Not having to worry about that extra class will be really helpful, and instead of writing lab reports every week I will be working on my research project.
My graduate school applications have been put off because of all the crazy school work I've had to do. I just need to write my personal statement for all of the schools I am applying to. Unfortunately that is the hardest part. I hope my creative juices start to flow some time soon.
My Honors project has started to roll a bit. I now have been given permission to use the cross-country course as my "venue". I will be asking for volunteers very soon because I will definitely need a lot of help.
My back issue has gone into relapse again. I have only been doing PT lately, but it doesn't seem to be helping. However, I did just sign up for a membership at a fitness club and they will be working with me individually on a program that will hopefully help me out. Being injured is one of the most frustrating things that I have had to deal with, especially because I am so used to being active all of the time. I really hope the new program gets me back to being able to do the things I want to do.
Scheduling for next semester is coming up, and I am pretty excited about it being my last registration. Even though I have so much to accomplish before walking across the stage, it couldn't come sooner. I am definitely ready to move on.
One thing I should mention that is a little off topic is that I went home last weekend to surprise my mom for her birthday. She definitely did not see it coming. It was pretty awesome. Thanks to my dad, sister, and brother for keeping such a huge secret for over two weeks. I'm not really sure how they did it actually.

Things Are About to Get Interesting
My first two weeks of school were packed with meetings, but my classes weren't very demanding. Now it is turning around. I don't have many things on my schedule, but I am starting to have to do a lot more work for class. I now have a lab report due every week, and I have assignments for my online class every week. I even have to write a five page paper by next week.
On top of all that, I have started my graduate school applications. Luckily, my top three people I chose to write my recommendations all agreed to being recommenders. Now I need to write a personal statement and get my transcripts sent.
I have also been working on my Honor's project a little. I have drafted a letter asking for the use of my top pick venue and am just waiting for feedback from my project adviser before I send it out.
Team conditioning has started for track. I am a little out of shape due to my injury, and I am still limited in the things I can do, but it feels good to be able to push myself.
I'm hoping I have a little more motivation to get some work done tomorrow than I do right now. Honestly, I'm a little exhausted. Looks like it is going to be an early night for me!
Thank you for reading and thanks so much to all of you supporting me. I could not reach my goals without you behind me.
“My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.” Psalm 62:1-2

One Week Down
I survived the first week of school. It was kind of annoying to have to go to so many meetings, but classes weren't too bad. I have determined that I will be able to combine the projects for two of my classes, so that is a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. Luckily I haven't had too much homework to worry about, so my weekend was pretty relaxing. I'm still trying to figure out what my research project is going to be though. I also need to start getting my Honors project moving. My online class is supposed to start tomorrow. I almost forgot I was taking an online class, but I don't think it should be too difficult. My workouts have been going pretty well. I'm still concerned with my back but I am taking it one day at a time. I am going home next weekend for the holiday, and may be going to the water park and zoo. It should be a good time. I don't think I have much else to add. Last week went by pretty fast, so I'm thinking this year will probably fly by. I'm ready to graduate, but am doing everything I can to enjoy my last year here. As always, thanks for reading. Hopefully I'll be able to keep up with my posts this year! God bless.

Back to School...Again
Well class starts tomorrow. Luckily I only have one class, but I'm still not feeling ready to begin another semester. My room in my apartment is pretty much finished. I had to find some pretty creative ways to fit all of my belongings in and organize it the way I want. Now that I'm settled and have enjoyed my weekend with some of my friends, it is time to get back to business. I have an insanely busy week ahead of me with class, work, and meetings. It is definitely going to be crazy. The GRE last week went well. I now have to ask for some recommendations and start applying to PhD programs. I also need to get started on my Honors Project soon. I don't see many outside projects getting started this week, but hopefully once I can get into some kind of groove with my schedule I'll be able to work on them. I don't really have much else to add, so as always, thanks for reading!
